Chapter Twenty-Eight

It was tough to look at Lopez. With all the tattoos and a two-inch scar on his chin, he was as hard as they came. Cuffed to the table, he was staring at the floor.

“Let me take those off.”

Free, he crossed his arms.

“I’m Detective Luca, with the homicide division. What do you say we help each other out?”

He shook his head.

“You’re an undocumented alien. Your ass will be back in El Salvador in no time if you don’t cooperate.”

“What do you want?”

He had a strong Spanish accent. “Information on who’s behind the gang pushing the new variety of coke-fentanyl.”

“I dunno nothing.”

“What about the ambushing of an officer on Santa Barbara Boulevard?”

“I said, I dunno anything.”

Did that mean he knew something and that it was the drug gang behind the shooting?

I stood up and picked up the cuffs. “You’re heading back home, my friend. If I were you, I’d watch my ass because I’m going to spread the word down there that you sang like Justin Bieber to the cops.”

“Either way, I lose.”

“No, if you help out, you walk out of here. Immigration don’t have to be notified. You keep your nose clean; you got nothing to worry about.”

“They find out I talked, an’ they always do, and then I’m a goner.”

“Depending on what you tell us, we can get you into protection.”

“And what? live in, like, Montana and freeze my ass off?”

“We could tailor a placement, maybe New Mexico or somewhere nice and warm.”

“You know, man, look at me. How am I gonna hide anywheres?”

“How long you think you’re going to last doing what you’re doing? Whether here or in El Salvador, chances are, you’ll be killed or spend the rest of your life behind bars.”

He shrugged.

“Look, right now, you’re going to stay here until you’re sent back. Why don’t you help us out?”

“I don’t know much.”

“Whatever you can tell me is going to help you. Who’s running it?”

“I don’t know. You gotta understand, it’s a real tight operation. Everything is separated. They’re crazy paranoid.”

“They have a place in Everglades City, right?”

“I think so.”

“Tell me where it is.”

“I don’t know exactly. I never been there.”

“How could that be?”

“Like I said, they keep everything separate.”

“What did you do for them?”

He crossed his arms.

“I’m not going to use anything against you. This isn’t being recorded.”

“Some of the guys just do the pickups and get it to the street.”

“Where are the pickups made?”

“All over the place.”

“Give me one.”

“Well, sometimes I, we get a text to go to a UPS locker or a Walgreens and get a FedEx that was sent.”

“They’re sending drugs with FedEx?”

“Yeah, and we get a new ID to use for the next delivery.”

“You’re sent a fake ID with each lot of drugs?”

“Uh-huh, almost every time with the product is a new driver’s license.”

“And that’s the coke-fentanyl mix?”

“Yeah.”

“How much are they sending each time with the couriers?”

“A hundred and ninety grams.”

That was an interesting amount. At two hundred grams, the sentencing jumped from three years to seven and the fine doubled to a hundred thousand.
